With this new website I have been experimenting with Google Web Fonts. See my menu in the left hand sidebar, compared with the image of my old menu from 10 years ago to the left of this text, or my button to visit my blog “Mac Help for Newbies” at the top of the right hand sidebar, Both of these have been made with Google Web Fonts.

In the past (IE 10 years ago when I built my original site) to have a nice font for your site title or menu items you needed to build them as graphics.

For example: To create a header for Amandas Boutique Cattery I showed Amanda a number of Font choices and after she choose the font she liked the most, I built her page header as a jpeg graphic using PhotoShop.

I built this in 2011 before I knew about Google Web Fonts (Google Web Fonts was launched in 2010 see typekit on wikipedia). Now this header could be built using Google web Font Sail.

Amanda’s Boutique Cattery

Since Google Web Fonts does not have Bellevue Regular, Sail is the closest font I could find. This is the current disadvantage of Web Fonts, exactly what you want may not be available, but if you are willing to be flexible with over 600 free fonts available at Google Web Fonts, or over 800 at Typekit.com, (a paid subscriber web font service from Adobe) and more services all the time, (just Google online web fonts) using photoshop to render type to graphics for the web may be a thing of the past.

I spent some time with a fantastic Ex-creative Director, who last was in the Advertising business in the 1970′s. He help me to take my 10 year old logo and re-band it for today.

Here is my original 2004 Logo
